1999 Jackson Season Wrap UpJackson had a wonderful season going for about 13 weeks. Then he disappeared, literally, at the season's end. He was very conservative with his lineups, drafting very smart and making very smart moves. Very un-jackson like, but as always...at the end of the season, a big "if only". Jackson came out of the gate with two division wins. Then lost his next two to Wallace and AB. Jackson had some concerns about his QBs. Pittsburgh was cut. Buffalo despite 18 in week 5 win over bye strapped Bud. In week 6, Jackson benched Buffalo and started SR Carolina, who paid handsomely with 25 points in a 54 point pounding of JK. However, the "right of first refusal" rule proposal failed, and Carolina went back into the free agent pool, and were picked up by division rival Best. However, Jackson continue on a roll. He beat Outlaw 37-36. A whipping of Talbot, a set back to the Mo-ha, and then a smashing of Peil. Jackson was looking good with a two point lead over Best as the season returned to division play. Best would get two shots at Jackson in weeks 11 and 14. Meanwhile, Best was improving thanks to his pick-up of Carolina QBs. In week 11, Jackson lost 47-32 and kept a one game lead. They would meet again in week 14. Until then both Jackson and Best whipped up on CZ and Stroupe, insuring that week 14 would be for the championship. In the interim, Jackson had found a new QB in Atlanta. In week 14, they were matched up against the 49'ers, a dream matchup... a dream match up in every other week but this one. They were completely shut down as was the rest of Jackson's team. Not a TD was scored as the West division title was rudely snatched away 52-8. For the playoffs, Jackson picked up red-hot Patrick Jeffers. However, Calvin didn't start him against Bud. Jeffers played on a Saturday, rolling up big numbers against San Francisco. Jackson, with no web access that weekend, called in his lineup on Sunday. Despite the mistake, Jackson had opportunites. Bud had benched a large number of points and Leroy Hoard was going on Monday night. However, Hoard got in only once, stuffed at the goal in another opportunity. The season was over. |
